Task 3 Production work

Task 3 Music Video Production
Castastic- tastics room

This is the song that we have chosen to use in our music video. However this music video has no video so we have nothing that we can copy from. All the ideas we have come up with are mixtures from all four of us in the group. The ideas we have come up with all have a good match with the lyrics and it fits in well. This actual music video is about a young lad who is very interested in music and his dreams were to become a good music artist. While he was aiming to go far with his music he never knew that the girl that was with him at the time actually wanted more than a friendship. He felt as if she was only there because of money and fame but little he knew her feelings towards him are real. Slowly he started to realize what his missing and how he feels without her being there. So he decided to sing this song aiming her as the target audience as well as her new partner. In the lyrics he mentions things about them from the past and how things use to be.

Mood Board :

The reason why i have used these pictures in my mood-board is because it relates to the music video me and my group are doing. The images all used tell different feelings. There are mixed emotions shown in this mood-board.

Word Board:

Our word board is printed out on a different paper as it couldn't be uploaded on my blogger.
However, on our word board the words mentioned are words that relate to the music video and the people in the music video.

Lyrics annotation :

This is the lyrics to the music video. In our group we had to write out the lyrics as there wasn't lyrics written out for this music video. Every line in the lyrics show how much he thinks of her and misses her. He also mentions how the new partner isn't as good as he was.

Initial Ideas :

The initial ideas that I came up with were similar to the 3 other members of my group. I had thought of doing the whole music video based on the lines sang. for example "sitting on the sofa", "thinking who shall i ring up" these lines made me think while singing these lines he could actually be doing them to. That was what i decided to happen throughout the music video also add in photos of them from the past making it seem more romantic and showing that a young boy can also feel the pain a young girl would when their hurt because of failure in love.

Task 2 music Video Production

Unit 29 Task 2

Music Video Productions

R&B:

RnB music is the most popular music within our modern days. When making any videos related to a music they do this because they want their style to be shown to the audience as well as having their lyrics sang out, they like to show off their music videos by showing the props they use within their music video. Artists like Kanye West, Jay Z, Chris Brown, Rihanna and Beyoncé have made a popular and successful approach in the music industries. In most the
RnB music videos the artists show of their talents and their money. RnB music videos are normally shot in a club, streets and recording studios or even sometimes in a made up house in a studio or even a big house with grand cars. RnB music usually like the music to be relevant to their lives and make it feel real to the viewers.  RnB artists usually have heavy jewellery; very expensive designer clothing’s and also is in casual clothing’s depending on the way they wish their music video to look. RnB music has a massive rage of props which they use within their music videos starting from the smallest to the largest props available. For example a grand car, house or even chairs and tables even the smallest thing like a teddy bear would be used but it all depends on what type of RnB music it is. There are usually hand gestures that be used that also classes as symbols. The colours are usually vibrant that shows the artist are calm and smooth. The reason these colours are used is to show that they have money to flaunt. However some R&B love music videos use these colours in order to protray that love and romantic vibe.

An example to R&B music can be :
Ashanti ft Ja Rule - Happy
and Donell Jones Ft Left eye- You know what's up

Animated - Daft punk - One more time

The song one more time by Daft punk is an animated music video. The music video is not appropriate for young children even though it has used a cartoon effect; the reason why this would not be suitable for them is because it has women with low cut tops. The actual theme is an adult type environment but been formatted as a child’s cartoon. The colour used in the music video also reflects to the types of colours you may find in a club.

Concert/live: Linking Park Numb/Encore

In this type of music video they have live performances for example in this video there it two artists rapping live in front of an audience. There is lighting that are all facing towards the stage and everyone in the audience are very close near to each other dancing and making noise. They are screaming and cheering and all excited before the live performance has taken place. There are also little clips of what happens behind the music video and clips of the artists and all in black and white. The background music is quite which is good because the audience can hear the singers better and hear the background music when the singers stop.

Homage: Ghetto Ghospel (2Pac)

The actual music video itself is like a storyboard there is times showing when what happened. It is like a tribute to 2 pac, there are not any bright colours in use it is duller and dark which makes the whole video look depressing and it shows it’s an upsetting story to it and there isn’t happy moments going on. There are gangs of men’s with heavy big chains and the big baggy outfits that are wore show a thug life style and their dealing drugs secretly. The story in the music video shows pain and hurt too many people differently and the dark colours show the pain they may be going through. At the end the lady is lifting up her veil thinking she can see the guy who just died but she’s actually seeing an illusion. There are pictures at the end showing 2pac.

Parody: Some Study That I Used To Know (Gotye)

The minute I seen the first bit of the music video it made me think twice if I should carry on watching it or not. It’s defiantly not aimed for children as it has 2 nude adults in it who are getting covered up with notes and things they studied at school and it’s a perfect match with the song and video. This music video is one of a kind defiantly the first I have ever seen in such style and in that way it is a good video as it differs from other video types.

 Kanye West – Gold Digger

The begging of the music video there was no background music it just started off with the singer singing and then the background music kicked in. the girls on the video are presented out like there on a magazine and they have really less clothing on this also will attract people to watch. This is mainly targeted at the adults as it isn’t appropriate for young children. It is very influential and this is the reason why it is mainly hit out the adults.

An example of Pastiche Music Video Christina Aguilera – Candyman

In this music video it takes you back to the old days as pastiche music videos are videos that imitate a certain time. In this video it contains very stonger image where it shows wome dancing in between loads of men to get attention. It is not highly not suitable for children at all. The clothing reveals a lot of skin and the makeup are strong this may be to attract more attention so more of the older people watch the video.

Lyric Interpretations
Pink - Try

In this music video there are many differences that you won’t come across in other music videos it has it unique taste and it stands out a lot. The clothing is less but this may be to attract more adults of both sexes. The lyrics goes well with the video as it aims out the main title ‘Try’ it shows throughout the music video the sexual desires or feelings they have to each other and how they don’t give up.

Ever wonder about what he's doingshe’s asking herself questions that she is thinking in her head.
How it all turned to lies
Sometimes I think that it's better to never ask why
she then is telling herself its better she doesn’t bother asking because she might know what the answer is.

Where there is desire
There is gonna be a flame -
here she is mentioning when there is a wish and they don’t agree then someone will be hurt.
Where there is a flame
someone’s bound to get burned
someone is hurt because of what has been decided.
But just because it burns
Doesn't mean you're gonna die
don’t stop trying to make things right.
You've gotta get up and try try try

Gotta get up and try try try
You gotta get up and try try try
-
here she is encouraging if anything bad happens not to give up but try.

Eh, eh, eh

Funny how the heart can be deceiving
here she is saying her own heart can be lying to her about what she feels is true.
More than just a couple times
why do we fall in love so easy
even when it's not right
she is questioning herself again.

Ever worried that it might be ruined
and does it make you wanna cry?
She’s maybe gone through it before and is afraid of going through it again.
When you're out there doing what you're doing
are you just getting by?
Tell me are you just getting by by by
by this she may mean him doing wrong behind her back and not worrying about her and just ignoring it.

In this music video before watching it I analysed the lyrics and I thought it would be a very dull and boring video of a couple that have broken up and she is trying but has actually given up but trying hard to try make it work. I thought it would be a normal Pop type music video where there will be flash backs money and grand houses and cars but then all that goes while she loses the one she was with.

However, after watching the video it was a complete different aspect it did have colour but only splatters of paint but it was still dull and damp type. The clothing was less and there was more of the couple getting close rather than I thought. The video had proven me wrong and it is actually a very good music video. It has the purpose shown out and it does attract a lot of attention.

The last song lyrics I am analyzing is Maroon 5 – One More Night

You and I go hard, at each other like we going to war – this line means they argue a lot which is like their going into war.
You and I go rough, we keep throwing things and slammin' the door
You and I get so, damn dysfunctional we stopped keeping score
You and I get sick, yah I know that we can't do this no more – these lines show they are having a hard time trying to keep things smooth and they are can’t keep trying to keep things good as it isn’t working out.

But baby there you again, there you again making me love you
Yeah I stopped using my head, using my head let it all go – here it’s like his being sarcastic about her making him love her were as he could be meaning there you start arguing again making me dis-like you.
Got you stuck on my body, on my body like a tattoo – this line is like his saying she’s always on his case or always there.
And now I’m feeling stupid, feeling stupid crawling back to you
So I cross my heart, and I hope to die, that I'll only stay with you one more night – this line shows he loves her enough to come back even when she annoys him and his giving her his word of coming back to her.
And I know I said it a million times
But I’ll only stay with you one more night – this line shows he has broken many promises of coming back before.

Trying to tell you no, but my body keeps on telling you yes
Trying to tell you stop, but your lipstick got me so out of breath – these lines show he wants to tell her something but his body language shows a different message also it’s like he has sexual desires/feeling towards his partner.
I'd be waking up, in the morning probably hating myself
And I’d be waking up, feeling satisfied but guilty as hell – these lines show if he does say or do anything wrong he will end u realising later how bad it was of him and he isn’t ready to go through it all over again.

Yeah baby give me one more night – this line shows he is very serious about having at least one last chance to show his true feelings.

Before watching the music video while I was analysing the lyrics it was clear to me that this song is also a love/sad song. I felt as if this would be about a couple that are in a relationship where they aren’t happy and don’t want to be together by try forcing each other to try hard to make something work when there is nothing there to make work. I felt as if in this video there will be more tears and pain and the video will have sad stories behind each line sang.

After watching the video I was very shocked that the lyrics didn’t match the video as much only a few lines did. However the music video was good itself it had a good story to it. A boxer who haven’t got enough time for his daughter and wife/girlfriend. So she leaves because of all the promises he breaks. The colours and the background music went well with the video. The style of the music video is really good and in some points the lyrics do fit well and does match up and in some they don’t.

Understand the purpose of music videos

Task 1

Music History

MTV

Music Television was created in 1980s. in 1980s MTV was instrumental in promoting the careers of performing such as Madonna, Michael Jackson, Prince and Duran who’s videos played in heavy rotation. In the late 1980s MTV started airing non-video programming aimed towards teenagers and adults. On the 1st of August 1981 was when MTV was aired for the first time. The reason why MTV was aired is to play the music videos. Till now MTV has become bigger and now it shows its own shows for example 'MTV cribs’, 'Sweet 16’ and ’16 and pageant’. Also they show music videos new and old. All the programs shown on MVT have things in common.in 1992 the highly rated shows were ‘The Osburnes’, ‘Nick and Jessica’, ‘My Super Sweet 16’ AND ‘The Hills’.

There are many purposes of music videos

There are many purposes of music videos; they could be promoting a product or even an artist depending on what type of music video it is. Music video’s also are there to entertain people even while there watching the music video liking the song they would also be interested in the video. Music videos also send out messages only depending on what type it is, also so if it is an important message. All music videos are made to bring money in.

Bessie Smith

Bessie Smith was the first person to produce the first music video in 1920, which was just a very simple video which contained photographs and had music in the background. In her music video ‘Baby won’t you please come home,’ she is trying to get people to watch her video because she is showing her emotions so they could she what she is trying to send out to people. There is black and white pictures used in this video which show this music video is very old because there aint any colours or effects used.

David Flincher

David flincher is a famous American film and music video director. He also a movie maker and the movies he has produced movies such as  such as Alien 3 from 1992, Seven from1995, The Game from 1997, Fight Club from 1999, Panic room from 2002 and Zodiac from 2007. Academy Award nominations for best director went to Fincher for his work in 2008 for the film ‘The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button’, also his 2010 film ‘The Social Network’. When Fincher was 8 he began to make movies. Fincher was hired by industrial Light and Magic in 1983, this is where he worked on productions for ‘Twice upon a time’, star wars; Episode VI – Return of Jedi, Indiana jones and Temple of Doom. In 1984 Fincher left IL to direct a commercial for the American Cancer Society, which showed a foetus smoking a cigarette. Fincher then got a chance to direct a documentary of ‘The Beat of the live drum’ featuring Rick Springfield in 1985. However Fincher would continue to direct spots for companies like Revlon, Converse, Nike, Pepsi, Sony, and Levi's, Fincher soon discovered music videos and went on to direct many promos.

A narrative music video

The narrative music video that I have chosen is by Katy Perry called “The one that got away”. In this video they are telling a story about how a girl lost the one she loved. It shows the story of how they ended up breaking up and he was thinking of her while driving and ended up falling of a cleft. Throughout the music video they show footage of them when they were together young and happy, like flash backs they bring in the story to the music video. At the end of the music video they show her going back to the cleft he fall from this shows she’s still thinking of him and loves him still. There are a rage of shots in this video from close ups to mid-shots. Throughout the music video they are showing emotions and how she is feeling. There purpose behind this music video is her losing the one she loves due to an argument they had. Below is the link to the music video:

Katy Pery - The One That Got Away
Maroon 5 - She Will Be Loved
Rihanna - Diamonds

A performance music video

Performance videos focuses on showing footage of the artist or band either in a casual environment, for example mingling with friends, performing, live performance or staged performance. They could be playing an instrument or singing. The example I am going to be using for this is called “Fireflies” by Owl city. In the begging of this music video there is a guy playing the piano and singing at the same time.
As he is playing the piano things around him are switching on. There are many close ups and full shots of the toys and lights in the room. There are different shots of the things going on in the room there are long shots and loads of close ups. In the begging they showed the entire scenery and during some on the parts in the middle as well. Below is the link to the music video:

Owl City - Fireflies
Labrinth - Let The Sun Shine
Adele - Someone Like You

A concept music video

Concept videos are based around a single idea or concept they are usually unusual and elusive, even strange for the audience. This unusual content is an attraction to many consumers, which draws them in and makes them want to watch more and gives them a spark of interest. The concept music video I have picked is by micheal Jackson 'Black or White'. this music video shows micheal changing from one part of the world to the other. There are many different shots used For example in the bigenning of the music video it starts of with zooming in close to a specific bedroom window from out of space. it then goes from close ups to mid shots and then shows the whole full shot of the room. Throughtout the music video there are different shots beining used. micheal has made the music ideo seem like a story by showing different cultures and different skinned people to show everyone is equal whatever the background. The music video is like a message to the audiance.

Michael Jackson - Black or White
Tinie Tempah - Pass Out
Lady Gaga - Paparazzi

Successful Music Video

Michael Jackson’s song ‘Thriller’ is a 13 minute and 34 second music video. The name of the song was released on the 2nd of December in 1983 and was directed by John Landis. The storyline of this music video is Michael and his date is watching a movie, they leave because his date gets scared. They take a shortcut through the graveyard on the way home.  Michael ends up becoming a zombie and becomes all funky and the he starts dancing tremendously to the tune of his song. below is the music video:
